Mount Arafat

Arafat and Jabal Al-Rahmah, Makkah – Historical and Religious Significance

1. Overview

Arafat is a vast plain located east of Makkah, Saudi Arabia, and is one of the most significant places associated with the Hajj pilgrimage. Within the plain stands Jabal Al-Rahmah, commonly known as the Mountain of Mercy, which is a well-known landmark visited by many pilgrims and travellers.

Arafat holds a central place in the Hajj rituals, as pilgrims gather there on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah for Wuquf, the standing at Arafat. Jabal Al-Rahmah is especially recognised for its association with this important day. Visitors travelling from Makkah may explore the area to learn about its religious significance and the importance of Hajj in Islam.

2. Historical and Religious Significance

Arafat is central to the Hajj pilgrimage. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed the Farewell Hajj and delivered his renowned sermon in this broader area. The gathering at Arafat is a defining part of Hajj, and the Prophet’s teaching emphasises the importance of being present there during the prescribed time.

Jabal Al-Rahmah is a prominent hill within the plain of Arafat. It is traditionally associated with the area where the Prophet’s Farewell Hajj took place. However, pilgrims should understand that climbing the hill is not a required part of Hajj, and there is no prescribed ritual that must be performed specifically at its summit.

Arafat reminds Muslims of repentance, prayer, humility and seeking Allah’s mercy. Its spiritual importance extends beyond the physical landmarks and is connected to the prescribed acts of worship performed during Hajj.

3. Importance for Umrah Pilgrims

For Umrah pilgrims visiting Makkah, Arafat and Jabal Al-Rahmah offer an opportunity to learn about the Hajj pilgrimage and explore an important part of Islamic heritage.

Visitors can:

• Understand why the gathering at Arafat is essential to Hajj.
• Learn about the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) Farewell Hajj.
• See Jabal Al-Rahmah, one of the best-known landmarks in the Arafat plain.
• Reflect on the themes of repentance, supplication, equality and seeking Allah’s mercy.
• Include the area in a planned Makkah Ziyarat or historical sightseeing tour, subject to local access arrangements.

Important: Visiting Arafat or climbing Jabal Al-Rahmah is not a required ritual of Umrah. The hill itself is not a substitute for the prescribed standing at Arafat during Hajj.

4. Location and Accessibility

Arafat lies east of Makkah, outside the central area surrounding Masjid Al Haram. Jabal Al-Rahmah is located within the plain and can generally be reached by road during suitable periods, subject to traffic controls and seasonal restrictions.
